| How do I create a new game? or challenge others? |
| Push "Wait For Game" button to create a game and wait for a challenger. If you find a player who is waiting, click the player and push "Challenge". |
| How do I watch other players' games? |
| Double-click the game in the Game List! |
| How do I use private message? |
| There is a text input in Player Info Window. You can open Player Info Window by double-clicking the recipient's name. You can also directly send private message from normal chat input by typing "@" + [recipient's name] + " " + [message]. |
| What does "!!!" as a player's title mean? |
| It means the player is in very high suspicion of software cheating. It is tagged automatically by the system. Although there could be some cases where it is wrong, please be careful not to get beaten by his software.^^ The tagged player himself cannot see the tag. If you are 100% sure that it is wrong, please notify the admin. (although it will disappear in time if it is really wrong, as the admin always checks manually as soon as he finds a tag.) |
| What
are the rated time rules? |
| There
are 4 kinds of rated time rules at 81Dojo. (More options are available in non-rated games, of course) - 45 minutes + 60-second byoyomi - 15 minutes + 60-second byoyomi - 5 minutes + 30-second byoyomi - 0 minute + 30-second byoyomi |
| What
is the formula for calculating the ratings? |
| The
rating change is calculated by: min[31, max[1, 32 * (0.5 - 1.4217e-3 * d + 2.4336e-7 * d * |d| + 2.5140e-9 * d^3 - 1.9910e-12 * d^3 * |d|)]] * c where, d = winner's rating - loser's rating c = ((t/5)^0.8 - 1) / (9^0.8 - 1) + 1 (t: initial thinking time in minutes) |
| Why are the time rules limited for rated games? |
| What
is Try Rule? |
| Why
does 81Dojo recommend Try Rule? |
| What
are the illegal moves in 81Dojo? |
Illegal
moves in 81Dojo are:
|
| Why
does 81Dojo adopt illegal move losses? |
| The
purpose of 81Dojo is not only to spread shogi to the world but also to
do it in the CORRECT way. Players outside Japan has little opportunity of playing real shogi games, and can only play on the internet. And since most shogi servers don't reproduce illegal move losses, the players havn't been able to experience one of the most important essense of shogi, "Nifu". Thus 81Dojo wants to let you experience how exciting shogi could be with Nifu rules. (It even happens in professional world! See this video from 6:00. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuHVMhhc4SY ) You've been always saved by the softwares not allowing you to drop another pawn on that file when you've actually commited Nifu? Then you havn't been experiencing the real world of shogi. 81Dojo also values consistency. Shogiclub24 for example, allows #1 (in the question above) to happen and let the opponent capture the king. It then doesn't allow #2 to happen. But then allows #3/#4 to happen, but in this case the players have to discuss the illegal move themseleves! No consistency is there. |
OK,
but doesn't that cause losses with mis-clicking? (for example, dropping
a pawn on adjacent square by mistake, just as the diagram below)![]() |
| First
of all, a mis-clicking is supposed
to cause you a loss in the first place, even in other servers you've been
playing. Here are the examples. In <A> you misclicked R-2e instead of Rx2d. You'll lose your rook in the next move, and will probably resign! In <B> you misclicked L*3g instead of L*2g (just as in your example of P*3d). You'll lose your gold, and will probably resign! <A>
Do you blame the server for these losses? 81Dojo isn't the only server
that makes you lose with mis-clicking. It only increases the probability of
mis-clicking loss to some extent.
<B>![]() So it's only matter of balancing between: 1. how much we increase the probability of misclicking loss, and 2. how much we want to make it like real shogi. Now, regarding the balance, the probability of mis-clicking Nifu (such as the P*3d) are so rare, while real Nifu mistakes are so often. There in fact happened so many real Nifu losses at 81Dojo, which entertained the players here in the way that could've never happened in other servers. So it is offering more goods than bads, reproducing many real Nifu and causing very few additional mis-clicking losses. |
| But
I don't prefer even the slightest increase of the probability. Rather
play in non-strict and non-real situation. Is there any way I can play
without illegal moves? |
| In
rated games, we obviously can't relieve you from illegal move losses. However, since 81Dojo would like to be easy on beginners, Nifu is rejected by the client applet in non-rated games. So you won't lose with it. (except for when you are playing handicap giver) Also, we could add an option of "confirmation dialog" for every move you make to eliminate all mis-clicking. (This could be implemented to rated game as well) |
| If
81Dojo accepts illegal moves, why not accept ALL of them? (Such as
mis-reading the diagonal with Bishop
from 7g to 3d, etc.) |
| Once
again, it is the balance of probabilities between reproducing a real illegal mistake loss
and punishing a mere mis-click. It is true that there happens a real mis-reading of a diagonal - even in professional games -, it is so much rarer than Nifu etc. If we allow such kind of illegal moves, more mis-click losses will happen than real illegal mistakes do, which means we get more bads than goods. |
| What
do the medals on avatar image mean? (And do I hold this for good once I
got it?) |
||||||||||||||||||||||||
Up
to 5 medals are awarded to each user based on the following
requirements.
However, these rules might change according to how many players have obtained the medals. Especially, #5(total wins) should change soon to larger number once most player attains 30 wins. Then you will get your medal revoked. ^^; Also, even after you obtained a medal, it will be revoked when you have dropped below the requirements again. |
| What
is Dragonfly Handicap? |
This
is Dragonfly. ("Tombo") It is not an official rule, but thought to be a
very good way to teach shogi to beginners, better than other official
handicaps.![]() |
| What is the policy of 81Dojo on software cheaters? |
| 81Dojo has several kinds of its own cheat detection system. If it finds multiple matches to certain conditions, it tags the player with "!!!" mark and removes him from the ranking list. As soon as noticing a tag, the admin will check manually whether the automatic tagging is valid or not. However, one way the players can detect by themselves is that a player's name on the board changes from black to grey when he accesses other windows. Although it does not neccessarily mean he is cheating, you can notify the admin if you felt suspicion, which might help the tagging to be faster by admin's manual investigation. |
